top-news

In a scathing critique of the BJP-led NDA government, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram denounced the saffron party, labeling it as a “cult” that venerates Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking out against what he perceives as a decline in democratic freedoms during the Modi administration, Chidambaram urged the public to take action to “restore democracy.”

Chidambaram’s remarks were particularly aimed at the BJP’s manifesto, which he claimed was crafted hastily within 14 days and dubbed as “Modi’s guarantee” rather than a traditional political manifesto. He expressed concern that this trend indicated a shift towards cult-like worship of Modi, reminiscent of regimes where such worship led to authoritarian rule.

The veteran Congress leader also addressed contentious issues like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), assuring that if the INDIA bloc assumes power, the CAA will be repealed. He underscored the need to prioritize job creation and wealth generation, emphasizing that these aspects are central to the Congress manifesto.

Expressing apprehension about the future of democracy, Chidambaram cautioned against potential constitutional amendments if Modi were to secure a third term in office. He highlighted the importance of preserving freedom of expression, which he believes has been curtailed under the current government.

As India grapples with political polarization and economic challenges, Chidambaram’s remarks add to the ongoing debate surrounding governance, democratic principles, and the direction of the nation’s political landscape.
